Most Educated in the Middle East

Educational Attainment in the Arab World: A Groundbreaking Comparative Analysis

In our most recent study, we analyzed 12 Arab countries to determine their relative educational standing through multiple metrics. The research team examined data from three primary sources: UNESCO World Education Statistics 2024 (focusing on Bachelor's and Doctoral degrees), patent applications to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 1980-2023, and academic peer-reviewed publications contained in the SCOPUS database from 1996-2023. Using these datasets, we developed an algorithm to score each country on a per capita basis.

Key Findings:

  1. Qatar leads the rankings with a score of 2.65, potentially due to its successful Education City initiative which began in the early 2000's.
  2. The United Arab Emirates follows closely with 2.63, boasting the highest percentage of  Bachelor's degree holders among the studied nations. The UAE's position may strengthen further through Dubai's D33 initiative, which aims to "attract the best international universities to make the emirate a global leading center for higher education" by 2033.
  3. Lebanon ranks third with 2.44 and distinguishes itself with the highest percentage of PhD  holders relative to its population. Lebanon's strong performance may reflect its historical role as a regional educational pioneer.

The complete rankings are:

  1. Qatar
  2. United Arab Emirates
  3. Lebanon
  4. Saudi Arabia
  5. Tunisia
  6. Jordan
  7. Bahrain
  8. Kuwait
  9. Oman
  10. Palestine
  11. Egypt
  12. Algeria

First Comprehensive Comparative Study

This study represents the first comprehensive attempt to quantitatively assess and rank educational achievement across the Middle East using a multi-dimensional approach. While previous research has examined individual metrics such as enrollment rates or degree completion, this study uniquely combines educational attainment, research output, and innovation metrics to provide a more nuanced understanding of each country's landscape. The integration of WIPO patent data with traditional educational metrics and SCOPUS research output creates a more complete picture of both educational achievement and its practical applications.
