To rank these universities by global visibility, the researchers evaluated numerous data points across six main categories to ascertain the most recognized universities.
A major element in global visibility is the overall number of news mentions (how many times the university is mentioned in the news in a one year period). The public's interest level is also important (how many people are searching for information on the university), as well as social media (the total amount of fans and followers on the university Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn channels), website visitors (the number of people who visit the university website each month), web references (the number of places that link to the university's website), and the total online footprint (the aggregate amount of information and materials pertaining to the university freely available online). This data is calculated to provide a key indication of a university's overall global visibility.
Legend
1. News Mentions - This represents the level of visibility a university has based on the number of news mentions in the previous calendar year. It consists primarily of national and international newspapers, print and online journals, television and radio broadcasts, newswires and blogs.
2. Public Interest - This is a measure which gauges unaided interest in the university. It is based on the number of people looking for information about the university in the major search engines (i.e Google).
3. Social Media - This number consists of a combined total amount of fans and followers on the official university Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram and LinkedIn channels.
4. Website Visitors - This reflects the average number of people who spent time visiting the university website in a given month.
5. Web References - This information is based on the number of unique online links to the university website. This parameter is based upon the algorithm first popularized by Google's PageRank and can also be referred to as a citation.
6. Online Footprint - The university's digital footprint reveals the amount of online information publicly visible and freely accessible as pertains to the university.
